On Tuesday I was about to retrieve our trash can from the kerb and was commanded to leave it there for pickup. It was taken away, has presumably now been shredded even though we only got it about 5 years ago, and eventually, late on Thursday (which was a long time to wait with a sick dog and two sick humans all producing hazardous waste), they delivered a new one with a yellow-lidded compartment for food waste taking up a third of the space. It has been hard to get our trash in the remaining space, and I'm concerned the foam pieces in which the weekly food delivery comes will stick in there; we can't recycle foam and there is no way to break them up, so I've been laying them flat on top and loading so that the other trash pushes them out, but they won't fit flat in the new cart. And I don't plan on using the food waste section. I don't eat meat, and we already compost fallen fruit that we don't eat (they don't accept it in the garden waste bin for some reason), vegetable peelings and spoiled veggies, and the housemate's teabags as well as smaller yard waste. And I understand it's to be strained to remove plastic bag bits and then fed to pigs - with no effort to remove pork waste - and the pigs will be kept just for that purpose, as four-legged consumers of people's mixed, partly decomposed food waste laced with plastic, bones, and probably pesticides. Poor pigs. And what a costly to-do. They are already running ads on some bus shelters reminding people to eat what they buy. Really pushing that message would have been so much cheaper, less wasteful, and more respectful of the pigs. I feel like doing an animal rights raid and liberating the pigs.

And I'm not going to use the little free container intended to sit on the kitchen counter collecting food scraps, thank you very much city council. A whiffy bag of proto-compost is enough. Which reminds me, I need to feed the compost monster.

A second day in a row of beautiful blue skies and golden sun, cool enough to do almost anything. Yesterday I felt well enough to blót in thanks for fall and as I did so it reminded me of that beautiful day 16 years ago.

I saw a house all decked out for Hallowe'en fully 2 weeks ago. But the guy with all the inflatables has repoured his porch slab and redone his front yard in xeriscaping - lots of little isolated plants on one side, a small groundcover pseudo-lawn on the other. So no space for the bumptious ghosties, I'm afraid.

Had to go from work for exquisite torture at the hands of the dentist. She opened up my gum where I have had a little abscess for close to two years despite repeated ministrations: and found something that had been in there all this time. Not an alien fetus but probably a bit of popcorn hull. Now removed. As usual, I'm now suffering all kinds of pain whereas the abscess hardly bothered me at all; just another item on the medical bucket list.

Thursday was family games night, with pizza. [personal profile] sithjawa joined, as well as the partner's large array of siblings and their spouses/etc.

After games were done, my partner showed me Who Framed Roger Rabbit? out of the "You haven't seen that yet?" queue. And we watched more of The Orville, and I tested out my stand mixer by making some cookies.

Friday, in honor of the equinox, I baked a sweet cardamom loaf. Then we did a shopping run, and my partner made dinner.

These past two days have involved a lot of small gas-powered motors around. Partner has summoned a yard maintenance company to take care of some of the tree, bush, weed, and tenacious invasive morning glory things that the ex neglected in the interminable six months leading up to departure. It's been loud, but is so much better looking now. Though there are still some more things left for today, like the stack of lichen-covered branches in the driveway.

Oh and we need a new janitor again. His doctor advised him the schedule would be too much for him.

The poor dog currently has to be kept on a tight leash when she goes out, prevented from running (or sitting in the grass). For the second morning in a row, the mostly white cat was sitting on the corner of the fence, gazing at her, when I brought her out for the first time. Today the cat was almost hidden under the neighbor's red-leaved tree. I tried to keep the dog from noticing her. Then when I brought her out a second time, there was a scrabbling and an unkempt white and orange cat I don't remember seeing before jumped up onto the fence, and moved quickly away along it. Poor dog. On the other hand yesterday I discovered she'd managed to make a slit in the removable screen in the window by my bed. I think she used the edge of her cone. Luckily I had a replacement, so her plan to leap onto the porch while the cat(s) consume the food I leave out, or while the mailcarrier was trying to deliver the daily Lands' End catalog, was foiled.

Back to work. Hope I managed to stock up enough sleep. It was cool today, and I didn't notice the sun ever burning off the clouds. Definitely fall weather, and though the trees have hardly started to turn, I noticed the other day that the cotoneaster berries are starting to go orange.

Long day!

Breakfast with partner and metamour Leopard Girl.

Seanan McGuire event in Silverdale. We brought tribute, and were briefly Seanan's favorite. (Diet Dr Pepper and candy corn. Seanan is a being of predictable tastes.)

Mini muffin tin quest!

Partner made a note they should chat with our mutual friend in London about stuff. Hooray, viable communities.

Dinner for the extended polycule, with many dishes thanks to Trader Joe's. (Rice, orange chicken with extra zesty sauce but no carrots since we ran out, BBQ pork buns, pot stickers, spring rolls, and green beans. The rice and green beans weren't pre-packaged, and I do a little customization to the chicken by adding orange peel and scallions. The gyoza and bao steam over the rice, and the spring rolls could bake with the chicken. The green beans start frozen and get gently fried with seasonings. Usually it's butter and Montreal steak seasoning, but Stray Puppy Girl is very lactose intolerant, and Leopard Girl dislikes red pepper. So I went for sesame oil, garlic, onion, pepper, salt, ginger, a packet of soy sauce that needed using, and the excess teriyaki sauce from the other night. It turned out well. To my immense gratification, my partner really likes all the iterations of the green beans that I have made so far. Generally they disappear immediately.)

Club night. Without going into excessive detail, one of the groups near the people I was with were having a hilarious time, and kept setting each other off giggling. That prompted our group to giggle. The glee was infectious.

Everyone is spending the night. We hauled the camping pads out of the alleged guest room (it is currently not in a state for guests as my textiles have exploded all over it) and they're set up next to the futon in case it turns from cozy to crowded in the middle of the night. Things are well set up for breakfast, and there should be cheesecake at some point (thus the mini muffin tins).

It's time for another question thread!

The rules:

- You may ask any dev-related question you have in a comment. (It doesn't even need to be about Dreamwidth, although if it involves a language/library/framework/database Dreamwidth doesn't use, you will probably get answers pointing that out and suggesting a better place to ask.)
- You may also answer any question, using the guidelines given in To Answer, Or Not To Answer and in this comment thread.

Today we went to the Computer History Museum in Mountain View. It was quite impressive, although the little Wikipedia quiz/game was very silly.

Unfortunately the dog has once more done something nasty to her hindquarters. She visited the vet yesterday and we had to take her in early this morning for surgery. Poor little dog.

It did eventually get cooler, but we've visited several beaches and all caught the sun.

I have family visiting this week, so I'm taking a vacation week. The gods have apparently decided to make things interesting: after the sudden early-morning wind storm, which apparently left meteorologists scrambling for an explanation, we had a full-blown thunderstorm with rain after I collapsed into bed yesterday, leaving my laundry on the line. It was still flickering when I crawled out of bed, so I was able to say hi to Redbeard. And I see they are now forecasting another hot day today and have switched the cooler days to starting on Wednesday. Clearly they are sticking pins in the map at random.

16 years ago, around about now.

Tremendous wind came through starting just before my mandatory lunch break. It blew over the "reserved parking" sign in front of the store while I was eating. Seems to have died down now; I guess the Hunt has swept on to the East Coast.
